Jo ‘Mrs H’ Howell joined the Avocet Team in February 2025 to nourish and develop our brand new Accountancy and Financial Services division.
What inspired you to join the Avocet team?
To join the team at Avocet to be accepted and respected for the knowledge and experience that I have within the accountancy and financial services sectors both locally and nationally for candidates and clients.
What will you bring to the Avocet team?
With over 28 years recruiting across the UK from my roots in the South West. With the knowledge and experience from time in London/South East/North West and Scotland. I have worked across a huge range of clients from SMEs, start-up, regional and national networks within financial services, finance and accountancy practice.
What do you love most about your work?
It always changes – never stays still but the root is the finding that match with client and candidate. It never becomes dull and the relationships become career long as clients and candidates grow and find their new spaces and places. From graduate staff I have placed who have becomes FD, CFOs.
What do you enjoy outside work?
Supporting a busy family teenagers do have their moments. With the demands of my lovely 82 year old Mum who is on the dementia curve but with support living independently. If any time remains I love an outdoor swim at EGCC – with the morning ladies. But not sure if the gossiping counts as exercise. Along with Doug the dog – large wild terrier who also enjoys a swim. Supporting my LOTPS who live in Countess Wear (Ladies of the Parish!). The Double Locks does work as a great therapy stop on a local dog walk.
What’s your biggest career lesson so far?
Never stop never give up in all thing life and career. It changes, you change and when you keep on going other avenues always appear. It is a marathon and not a sprint.
I started working in the family corner shop in the 1980s behind the counter that I could barely see above. But it gave me huge insight into understanding how people work and interact and what tribe people fall into.
Your only given a little spark of madness; you mustn’t lose it but use it.
What’s next for Avocet Commercial?
The hope is that we continue to grow and build on solid foundations for clients and candidates. Be who we are and work to give an honest and inspired approach to recruitment. It’s a people business and to never forget that is at the heart of what we do.
